- Statement
-
For outsiders, figurative work IS art.
-
For an outsider trying to prove himself capable, figurative work seems an inevitable right of passage.
-
For insiders, this can all be skipped and so they ask why I do it at all.
- Background
-
For several years I apprenticed to Robert Bricker who owns BronzeCraft Foundry for Sculpture in Waynesboro, VA.
Like many small art-foundries it is very 19th century in its approach to art, artists, and homegrown equipment. Each member is expected to learn and master every step in the operation from moldmaking to printing to spruing and casting. Its also 19th century in its treatment of "apprentices".
-
I learned a tremendous amount from Robert about both figurative work and the art-casting process.
